Brisbane Draw ‘Till I Die
Another week, another draw. This is something Ange will not want. It appears Melbourne Victory were correct. They found the way to stop The Roar. From the last two weeks Brisbane Roar FC has only collected 2 points from a possible 6, and how? Giving up possession and control of the game and focusing on a solid defence. Wellington Phoenix tried a slightly different method because they had more than 9 players on the field and it worked. Slightly. They sat back with their defence tight, with 3-4 men ready to burst forward on a counter attack in an attempt to shock The Roar defence. It was quite a successful move but something that looked like Ange was prepared for because The Roar defence was always ready to get back into position and be the wall they usually are.
A mistake by Michael Theoklitos assisted the Phoenix with their goal, but also great work by the New Zealanders, passing around the goal for a cool tap in. Brisbane Roar style goal. There is one problem I can see with this though. That’s two games where we have been ‘defeated’ by a team sitting back to defend. By watching Thomas Broich’s set piece goal in the Victory game, everyone should be aware that Rado Vidosic is a master at replays. The man does his homework more than twice just to check that all his i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed. The assistant coach works just as hard as anyone else in the club to make sure the team is ready to take on the next game and know where each and every team has a defensive hole.
How is this bad? Two games now teams have sat back and defended against The Roar. No doubt Ange will give Rado the task to sit down and watch not just the other teams to find a defensive hole, but also The Roar, attacking a blockade. He now has 180 minutes of game time to figure out what to do, plus the games of Newcastle Jets who are always a tough team at home. If the Jets are happy for a draw against a team who are happy to press even away from home, then parking the bus might be an option. If they dare. I don’t have any suggestions for beating my team because in my bias eyes at the moment, they are unbeatable. But for the Wellington Phoenix to come out across the ditch and steal 1 point from The Roar with a limping team 5 men down, congratulations.
